The Tennessee Wildlife Federation Hunting and Fishing Academy program is offering seven hunt opportunities for youngsters to apply for special mentored (guided) turkey hunts this spring.

The Hunt Masters program is designed to give youngsters a 3-day ‘immersive’ experienced that includes hunting plus a variety of games and other educational experiences to teach good conservation practices. (Photo: Richard Simms)

Hunting and Fishing Academy hunts are great opportunities for youngsters 9 to 18 to turkey hunt with their parent/guardian and an experienced TWF Hunt Master.

Each hunt is a three-day immersive experience. Youngsters will learn the fundamentals of turkey hunting, and they will also have the opportunity to develop outdoor skills such as field dressing harvested game, outdoor recreation skills, orienteering with a compass, and the principles of “leave no trace” outdoorsmanship.

These opportunities are more than a simple hunting event. Hunting and Fishing Academy provides engaging hands-on instruction in the art of becoming an outdoorsman. Highly-trained, lifelong hunters will demonstrate and guide participants through completing essential skills in the field. These mentors remain a resource to participants long after the weekend is over.

Hunt requirements:
— Hunters must use a shotgun with a full choke and have the corresponding turkey ammunition. Here is a Turkey Checklist provided by program partner Academy Sports + Outdoors that can be useful to determine what you will need for a turkey hunt.
— Hunters must complete the Marksmanship Certification before attending the hunt.
— Hunters must have successfully completed the Tennessee Hunter Education course prior to the hunt and have a valid Tennessee hunting license.
— For more information about licenses, check out the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency’s (TWRA) Hunting & Trapping Guide

Participants will be selected from the applicants. Youth not selected for the hunt will be placed on a waiting list. The cost of each hunt is $150 for the hunting youth and $150 for the non-hunting parent/guardian for a total of $300.
