Rhea County Tennis Advances Six In District Tournament

Two Doubles and Two Single Players Advance for Eagles and Lady Eagles

Dayton, TN —  Rhea County won two doubles and two singles matches in District Tennis action to advance six players to completion of distrcit tournament on Monday, May 6 at home.  In boys’ action, the doubles team of Kyle Shaver and Brandon Newell won all three matches, only losing four games in three matches.  After first round bye, they moved on with 6-1,6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 wins to make the championship game of the District 6-AAA Eastern Divison.  In the championship game they won 6-0,6-1 over Kota Yanagida and Kyle Nguyen from Hixson.  The other Eagle to win, had a little rougher road to winning the championship.  Brody Murphy won 6-1,6-2 and 6-4,6-1 in his first two matches to earn championship game against Gacomo Gunneson of Red Bank.  Murphy split the first two sets with Gunneson before a strong finish with the 6-3 win over Gunneson.  This was a spirited game between two very animated and vocal player, who had both teams in the gallery to watch the last game as their’s was the last match.

Bradley Clark played in singles and lost to Gunneson of Red Bank 6-3,6-1.  In doubles action it was Garrett Walker/Cody Crump winning their first match 6-2,6-1 to move on to face Yanagida/Nguyen, who won 7-6,7-5.

In girls action, it was the Lady Eagle doubles team of Maddi Smith and Malee Kate Ballard who won their two qualifying matches with wins by 6-0,6-1 and 6-0,6-2 scored to advance to championship game.  Championship game was little tougher, but they prevailed over Alysanne Vuong/Kayla Truong of Hixson High School by 6-2,6-3 scores.  Sarah Edwards came in as number one seed in singles and she played strong in her first two games of the tournament with 6-0,6-0 & 6-1,6-0 scores.  First game of championship game against # 2 seeded Bailey Coyner was close with Edwards prevailing 6-4.  Edwards turned it up a notch, winning second game 6-0 to take the championship.

Hannah Parker also played in singes and she advanced with 6-3,6-3 win in her first match to earn game against Coyner.  Coyner was too much for Parker who lost 6-0,6-0.  In doubles action, Keylee Morgan/Alexis Smith won first match 6-3,7-5 to advance to face # 2 seeded Vuong/Troung of Hixson and lost 6-4,6-4.

All six players will be back in action on Monday as they play the western side of the bracket in games to be played at Lil Andrews courts.  Individuals semis start at 1 pm om Monday, May 6th. . Finals at 3 and 4 pm.  Girls team goes to East Hamilton on Thursday, May 9 to play at 4:30 to play Regionals. They matches will be played at Standifer Gap Park.
