The Rhea County community suffered a great loss Thursday when lightning struck and killed local football star, Jacob York.

The Class of 2015 graduate was on a Redstone Arsenal jobsite in Huntsville, AL, where he had worked for several months as a contractor with a Eskola Roofing, based in Morristown, TN.

With plans to come home for the weekend, York was wrapping up his week by putting away tools, when a violent storm blew in.

At 3:45 pm, he was struck by lightning and immediately went limp.

Co-workers performed CPR before an ambulance arrived that transported him to a local hospital where he was quickly flown to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit in Birmingham.

After numerous tests, Neurosurgeons advised the York family that the lightning strike had killed him regardless of him still having a weak pulse.

Jacob Andrew York was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Friday morning, July 15.

“We are very saddened at the loss of our Teammate,” said Col. Tom Holliday, Garrison Commander, Redstone Arsenal.

“We should all remember the family and friends during this time and rally around them.”
