Friday Preview – Golden Eagles Travel to Stone Memorial


We want to finish the regular season on a positive note. Go up there and play well. Play as well as we did here and get ready for the playoffs.

Coach Mark Pemberton – Rhea County


This is the final regular season game for the Coach Pemberton and Golden Eagle squad. The Eagles are coming off their biggest win this season after beating East Hamilton last Friday, 27-24. The win catapulted the Eagles into 7th place in state Class 5A standings. The Eagles are 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Class AAA District 6 play. Stone Memorial Panthers are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in Class AAA District 6 play. Let’s take a closer look at this week’s opponent.

Stone Memorial Panthers

stone-iconThis is Coach Mark Wattenbarger’s 16th season as head coach. The veteran coach has a record of 64-102. The team has recorded the most wins per season with 6. Stone Memorial’s program began with the new school in 2006. The Panthers are coming off a tough district loss to White County in Sparta last week, 22-7.

QB Brady Wattenbarger has thrown for 1,223 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. His favorite target Brian Frye has 23 catches for 485 yards. Justin Johnson a sophomore has over 1,010 yards rushing averaging 112 ypg. The team has a balanced attack averaging 138 rushing and 155 yards passing per game. The team also has a total of 6 interceptions for the season.

Rhea County Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles received some well deserved acclaim from local and state media after their big win over East Hamilton. Not only did the team get moved up to 7th in Class 5A Standings in the state, but Coach Mark Pemberton has been nominated for Coach of the Week. The following teams are proposed to be in our quadrant for Class 5A Playoffs:

Keep an eye on them.   Our quadrant appears to be stacked with powerhouses for the most part.  This is a great year for football in Rhea County and Tennessee.
