We started on a bank and on our way down we caught 2, and we caught her on the way back up. When she hit, she knocked 3 foot of slack in my line.

Chattanooga, TN — According to RCHS Eagle Anglers Coach Brian Derlak, it was definitely not an easy day to pinpoint what the fish wanted to eat.  That didn’t keep Eagle Angler Cody Gunter from bagging a 10.38 lb monster.  The trophy-sized bass set a new RCHS record.  Gunter and co-angler Taylor Clark amassed a total 4 fish weight of 20.76 lbs – another school record.

With 7 schools participating in the event, Rhea County was well represented in the Top 10.  In addition to the 1st place finish, 3rd place went to Tyler Price and Garrett Hall with two beautiful bass that weighed 10.97 pounds.  Justin Wright and Jesse Hooker also had 2 nice ones that weighed 5.97 pounds. Wade Coleman and Cameron Poole had one beauty that weighed 5.62 pounds.  Bryce Travis and Shane Broadwell finished their day with two that weighed 5.41 pounds.

The 44 student anglers are well-disciplined and well-coached by Derlak and Asst. Coach Brandon Germany.  Coach Derlak is steadfast stating, “There are a couple of standing orders to be on this fishing team.  The most important thing we do here at this high school is school.  You have to be a hard worker to be on this team.”

I’m truly blessed to be surrounded by good kids and parents that have a love for fishing.

An obvious mutual admiration can be found between the coach and his team.  Derlak says, “I’m truly blessed to be surrounded by good kids and parents that have a love for fishing.”  One student angler says the team is more like a family than a team.
