Rhea County High School’s Zachary Swafford picks Sewanee to continue his football, track and field (shot put), and academic careers. Sewanee, better known as the University of the South, is a NCAA Division III school and member of the Southern Athletic Association.
“I’ve always liked Sewanee since my first visit. It’s a great school with super academics and athletics,” Zach admits.
On the gridiron, Swafford is a long snapping specialist and looks to make an immediate impact for the Tigers.
“We have a really good work ethic here (RCHS). That’s been instilled in me from all the coaches here. I’m really looking forward to bringing that aspect with me for college sports, football, track, and academics.
I don’t know that I’ve ever been more proud of him,” says his father Eric, a former State Representative who represented Bledsoe and Cumberland Counties.
“We’re fortunate enough that he was recruited by a lot of schools in the country. For him to make the decision to go to an academic school that’s thought of like the University of the South, we couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Swafford is also a member of the 2017-18 Boys State where he participated as a delegate to the state legislature as part of the group’s Jacksonian Party.
Swafford currently holds a 3.9 GPA and is looking to major in politics and minor in history on a pre-law track.
