Three Perfect Gifts for Outdoor Giving

I normally despise “Christmas gift idea” stories. But here are a few – three to be exact – that I think are worth sticking in a stocking.

First, give a gift that will last a lifetime – literally!

The Tennessee Lifetime Sportsman License covers every hunting & fishing license anyone will ever need and it is good for the recipient’s entire life. This license is good (in Tennessee) even if the license holder moves out of state. It’s available to anyone who has lived in Tennessee for at least twelve months.

Recipients get a certificate suitable for framing, which makes this special license a natural gift for children or grandchildren. Money from the sale of the Lifetime Sportsman License is set aside in a permanent trust fund from which only the interest will be used to finance programs designed to manage wildlife and preserve the heritage of hunting and fishing in Tennessee. The fee for a Lifetime Sportsman License must be paid in full in either cash, check, or credit card.

The cost is determined by the age of the applicant as follows:
– Under 3 years of age – $200
– 3 years of age but less than 7 years of age – $659
– 7 years of age but less than 13 years of age – $988
– 13 years of age but less than 51 years of age – $1,976
– 51 years of age but less than 65 years of age – $1,153
– 65 years of age or older – $329

Applications for a Lifetime License may be obtained by calling the TWRA Nashville Office (615-781-6500) or you can download the application and mail it in or fax it to (615) 837-4262. Send questions and requests for more information to

While we’re talking wildlife, maybe a stunning coffee table book featuring Tennessee’s breathtaking woods and waters is in order. Whether you are involved in hunting, fishing, boating, wildlife watching or just appreciation of the outdoors, you will love the picturesque pages of “Tennessee Wilderness – A Legacy Endures.”

“I could fill a book with the memories I’ve made on TWRA wildlife management areas. I cannot imagine a world without them.” – Richard Simms – Outdoor Editor (Image courtesy Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation)

It contains over 150 vibrant photographs of state, national and public lands and waters in Tennessee. Every photograph is taken on land or water that TWRA manages. The text is accented by quotes from noted outdoorsmen (including NewsChannel 9 Outdoor Editor Richard Simms).

The unique book published by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation originally sold for $39.95 but this year it is reduced to $23.50. You can order it online here.

Boaters can have peace-of-mind with a membership in either BoatUS Unlimited Towing and/or Roadside Assistance. (Image courtesy BoatUS)

Perhaps someone special in your life is an avid boater. If so, consider giving them peace of mind. A BoatUS Unlimited Towing Membership is only $72 for freshwater boaters. For the equivalent of $6 per month they get free on-the-water towing services 24/7. Included with this Unlimited Towing Membership is a subscription to BoatUS Magazine; exclusive fuel, transient slip and repair discounts; and the opportunity to earn rewards on boating gear at West Marine stores.

For another $14 you can add free roadside assistance that covers one hundred miles of free on-road towing for both a disabled boat trailer and its tow vehicle to a safe location or repair shop, along with lockout, flat tire, battery jump and fuel drop-off service. You can purchase only the roadside assistance policy (without on-the-water towing) for $38.

It is great peace-of-mind and if a boater ever has to use it will save them hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars.

Check it out at or by calling 800-395-2628. For every gift Membership purchased before December 25th, 2017, the gift giver will be entered to win a $200 West Marine gift card.
