Two Doubles teams win District: Edwards is singles finalist

Cookeville, TN —  Two Rhea County High School Doubles teams and one single player advanced at the district tournament in Cookeville recently.  The boys’ doubles teams of Kyle Shaver and Brandon Newell advanced with the championship.  Also advancing with their district tournament championship was the girls’ doubles team of Maddie Smith and MaleeKate Ballard.  Sarah Edwards finished second in her # 1 singles match-up and moves on to Region.  The Regions will be played at Cookeville High School on May 14, 1 p.m. central (2:00 Eastern). Semifinals will be followed by finals.

Rhea Co. tennis had a good week at District Tourney in Cookeville. Maddie Smith and MaleeKate Ballard won the Dist 6-AAA Girls Doubles Championship and Kyle Shaver and Brandon Newell won the Dist 6-AAA Boys Doubles Championship. Sarah Edwards was a Finalist in Girls Singles losing a long 3-setter to Cookeville’s Katie Ward.  All five players will advance to play in Regionals on May 14. (also in Cookeville)

Other Rhea Co. players were Bradley Clark and Coby Crump .  Madison Martin and Hannah Parker competed in doubles.  Garrett Walker, Brody Murphy, and Keylee Morgan competed in singles.  Martin/Parker lost in a closely contended 3-setter to the eventual second-place team, while Walker and Morgan both reached the semis.  Murphy was stopped in the quarters by the eventual boys runner-up.
