Eagles move on to face Cookeville in Championship

May 2018

Cleveland, TN —  Rhea County High School Soccer won 1-0 over Cleveland in a double overtime thriller at Cleveland that Eagles won with just over four minutes remaining in the second overtime.  Christian Newport hit in a winner through the gap of defenders at Cleveland goal for the go-a-head and eventual winning goal.

This was another classic game.  Different in style from the 1-0 loss by Eagles to Cookeville in District final 1-0, but still had the excitement factor.  Rhea County had not seen Cleveland play and it took a while for the two teams to figure each team’s style.  Cleveland was very good moving the ball and actually had advantage with more goal attempts in first half than Eagles and one goal was a direct shot that somehow did not find the back of the goal.

In the second half, Rhea County played with more energy and directions and did get a few break-away opportunities in the second half but still neither team could score.  After regulation ended in 0-0 tie, the teams entered into extra sessions.  First extra session was scoreless and finally with just over four minutes remaining Christian Newport took a shot but it glanced across the next and was bumped back toward the center of the net.  Newport took the rebound and found a crease in the mass of bodies at the net and put the ball through for the goal.

After four minutes of sweating it out, the Eagles fans roared in approval and players hugged and jumped for joy as the win put the Eagles back on the road to play a familiar opponent, Cookeville.  After the Eagles won the first contest between the two team on Penalty Kicks, Cookeville won the next two and Eagles are looking to event the season series with the most important game of them all as the Region Championship is at stake.

At 6 pm on Thursday, May 17th, the Eagles travel to Cookeville High School for the next chapter in this very interesting story.
