Evensville, TN – Rhea County Soccer hosted White County on Tuesday at the Rhea County High Football field. This was a very closely contested match that the Lady Eagles finally won in overtime. Rhea county scored early in the game for a 1-0 lead on the goal by Hailey Shelby with the assist from Lily Reed.
The home team was looking for the shutout and it looked possible until White County finally got on the board with a goal with seven minutes remaining. The Lady Eagles could not score over the next seven minutes and the game went to overtime.
In the first ten minute overtime period, neither team could dent the net and the game progressed to the penalty kick mode. Each team took five shots from point blank range against the goal. Rhea County went first and Abby Thaden put one through the left side and the Lady Eagles were off to a good start. The White County goal sailed wide right and Hailey Shelby scored the second goal for Rhea County but this time White County put a goal of their own into the net for the 2-1 deficit.
The next two shots were off for the Lady Eagles and White County made one to even the overtime 2-2. Next Lily Reed stepped to the line and put the kick into the left corner for the lead goal. Now Faith Rivera would need to prevent White County from scoring for the win. The kick was to the left side of the net and Faith moved to her left and extended high for the block and the ball settled harmlessly on the ground and the save gave Rhea County the win.
For the game Rhea County had nine shots on goal and Faith Rivera had four saves.
“We came out very hard at the beginning and then they kinda gave it back to us,” said Coach Justin Smith. “Lily and faith were big to give us the win.”
