The Golden Eagles were anything but hospitable as they shut out the Lions, 44-0. Rhea County celebrated their 2013 Homecoming in style with the victory over Red Bank. The two schools have a lot of history on the gridiron, and football tradition runs deep with both programs. But it was all Rhea County this Friday, as the Golden Eagles offense found success everywhere they looked, and the defense held the Lions under 100 yards total offense.
On the opening kickoff, Dimitrius Patterson #6, had a 50-yard return. This was a taste of things to come for Red Bank. Workhorse Junior runner Jacob York #5, took the honors and rumbled in for Rhea County’s first TD of the night. Senior QB Austin Dotson #9 has given Coach Pemberton’s Wing-T offense an extra dimension the last two games. Dotson hooked up with Senior Taylor Jenkins #12 for Rhea County’s second TD and Dotson’s first TD pass of the night. His second TD pass was a 67 yard reception to Dimitrius Patterson #6. Again, the Rhea County backfield is deep and talented. Other offensive standouts were Senior Joby Berry #3, Sophomore Noel Patterson #11, and Freshman Cody Bice #21.
We finally put it all together... this was an encouraging win.Coach Mark Pemberton
The Rhea County Defense really came together holding the Red Bank Lions under 100 total yards for the night while forcing 4 turnovers. The front 7 for the Golden Eagles controlled the tempo allowing the secondary to really step up. Out of the 4 turnovers, 3 of them were interceptions including a pick returned 44 yards by Senior DB Garrett Hill #7, pick returned 26 yards by Freshman Cody Bice #21, and a pick returned for 14 yards by Senior Joby Berry #3.
Rhea County appears to be hitting on all cylinders, offensively and defensively. Hopefully, we will be able to keep the momentum going as we start a 3-game stretch on the road. Next week will likely be the most important game so far as we battle the Cookeville Cavaliers for district dominance in Class AAA Dist 6 play. Cookeville beat Lebanon 16-0 Friday, giving them a 5-1 overall record.
