Eagles and Lady Eagles lose to Jets and Lady Jets
Evensville, TN — Rhea County Basketball began 2019 basketball with losses to Cumberland County High School. Night began with Lady Eagles losing 73-48 to Cumberland and Eagles followed with 70-60 loss.
Lady Eagles were led by Haley Cameron with 15 points and Mallory Hampton with 11 points. Gracie Dishman and Addy Wilson led Lady Jets with 32 and 18 points respectively. Also scoring for Rhea County were Macy Welch 6, Emma Gentry 5, Maddie Taylor 4, Maddie Smith and Shelby Davis with 2 points.
Macy Welch scored first basket of game and Eagles took 2-0 lead. Lady Jets then went 7-0 run before Maddie Taylor’s layin put Lady Ealges down 7-4. Mallory Hampton drive put Rhea County down 11-6 with 3:20 left in first quarter. Lady Eagles stayed close the rest of quarter and a 10-5 advantage over last three minutes put Lady Eagles down 18-16 at end of one quarter.
Davis scored first basketball in second quarter with 4:26 to cut deficit to 26-18. Eagles stayed close and ended half down 35-26, a nine point deficit. The third quarter was where game went south as Rhea was outscored in third 15-2 to run lead to 50-28 with 3:36 left in quarter. Lady Jets maintained double digit lead rest of the game and finished with 73-48 win.
Ricky Guthrie put Eagles up 2-0 to begin the game. Teams battled to 12-12 tie before late Eagle basket gave Eagles 14-12 lead after one quarter. Eagles continued to play well and took 28-21 halftime lead. Jets took a 20-13 advantage in the third quarter for 41-41 tie after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, five consecutive three point makes broke open a close game and they ran lead to take 56-45 lead with 4:08 remaining in the game. Eagles came back to cut lead to 56-51 with 3;10 remaining and played hard to the end but could not dent the lead and ended up on wrong end of 70-60 loss.
Ricky Guthrie led the way with 18 points and Dylan Palermino and Drake Taylor had 15 and 13 points respectively. Also scoring for Eagles was Kaleb Laws 9, Vincent 3 and Thunquist 2.
