Peggy Jewell Smith age 85, of Dayton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.
Peggy was a life-long resident of Rhea County and was born on September 15, 1933 to the late Arnold and Elsie (Hall) Tumlin. She was a member of Vine Grove Methodist Church in Dayton and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. For over 25 years, she served as a Gray Lady at Rhea County Medical Center in Dayton. Her passions in life were serving others, traveling, cooking, reading and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Smith, a grandson, Brandon Smith and two brothers, Ray Tumlin and George Tumlin.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Howard F. Smith, of Dayton, her children, Margaret (Terry) Broyles, of Spring City, Debra Manley, Donald (Wanda) Smith, Richard (Teresa) Smith and Garry Smith, all of Dayton, one sister, Martha Jo Rievley, of Chattanooga, one brother, Robert (Dianne) Tumlin, of Dayton, 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family would like to send a special thanks to Rod Goncalves, (grandson-in-law & doctor,) for his loving care and family support, and special friends, Gladys Best and Lisa McCallister for their devoted friendship to Peggy over the years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Knox and Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. Interment will follow at Smith-Wilkey Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
