Media and Coaches pick Rhea to win District

As area coaches, players, and media gathered at The Bridge in Ooltewah yesterday for the annual Region 5A-4 Media Day, both the coaches’ poll and media poll picks Rhea County to win a district title.

Coaches picked Ooltewah as runner-up with Walker Valley, who has 17 returning starters, a close third. Both teams tied for second in the media poll.

“We’ll continue to knock and hope to have another run, but we don’t have a lot of depth,” said Rhea County’s Mark Pemberton.

“We only have 15 seniors and 28 juniors, so we’ll try to mix it up on offense and we’ll rotate on defense. We’re bigger up front than we’ve been in a while and we’re blessed to have a couple of running backs who gained more than 1,000 yards each last year,” noting Cody Bice and Mason Stephenson who’ll join Eddie Davis for one of the most experienced backfields in the state.

The Golden Eagles will host Franklin County this Friday, August 5 at 7 pm for their second preseason scrimmage, followed by their final preseason scrimmage at East Hamilton next Tuesday, August 9.

Rhea County will open the 2016 season at Baylor on August 19.
