March 2019

Evensville, TN — Rhea Colunty High School senior Mary Kanipes recently singed scholarship papers with Tennessee Wesleyan University in Athens Tennessee to play soccer.  Mary and her teammates just finished a great season with 11-6-1 record.

The girl’s soccer senior class was 42-26-3 over the last four years(best ever at Rhea County High School) and had four consecutive winning seasons. This was overall best record ever.

Mary Kanipes is part of a four player senior class for the Lady Eagles, along with Whitney Gross, Noel Cannon and Erica Chacon. Mary along with Whitney earned 6-AAA All Distrcit honors for the 2018 season.  She has done her work in the classroom too.

Mary eally likes the situation at Tennessee Wesleyan.  She is very familiar with the area, having lived near Athens growing up before moving to Rhea County.  She fell in love with the school and the coach.

She will pursue nursing academic road while at Tennessee Wesleyan and later at possibly Roane State.  She wants work in labor and delivery, having a love for babies and helping to bring them into the world.  She is in the Certificed Nursing Assistant program at Rhea County High School.

When talking about coach Justin Smith, she said, “He has been an amazing person these four years.  I could not have asked for a better role model as a coach.  I can always depend on him to give not only soccer advice but life advice.”

Mary began her soccer career in recreation league play.  She said, “I ended up as goalie because they were looking for someone with body type to fill the goal and someone who didn’t run so fast and I fit the bill.  So began the beginning of a love affair with playing goalie.  I love playing goal keep.”

Mary will be competing as a goalie with Tennessee Wesleyan.

Mary has always been a joy to interview and watch play for the Lady Eagles.  She has played well and I look for big things at the next level.  She is a very well grounded young woman, who is looking to go into a field of service.
