Win puts Eagles record at 1-4 For 2018: Hit Road to Cumberland on Tuesday
Evensville, TN — Rhea County High School opened their 2018 home season with their first win of the season over Sale Creek(5-0 before game) on Thursday evening. Ealges will be on the road Tuesday for game with Cumberland County before returning home for game with Hixson on Thursday.
Kaleb Laws started the Eagles with four points on inside shot and two free throws in first minute of play. Sale Creek finally dented the scoreboard with Holland three point basket with 5:35 left in quarter. Taylor answered with his own three seconds later. A Defore three trumped a Ricky Guthrie inside basket but Eagles still led 9-8 with just under four minutes remaining in first quarter. Holland and the Panthers beat the press and layin gave Sale Creek the lead 10-9. It was Sale Creek with 12-9 lead before Drake Taylor spotted Kaleb Laws behind the Panther defense and Laws dunked with Taylor the assist to put Eagles up 11-10 with just over two minutes remaining until half. Guthrie cleaned up garbage for put-back to give Eagles 13-12 lead, answering Law basket. May answered to give Panthers lead 14-13 before Law picked up second foul with just over minute remaining. Hunter Hill hit a floater just before the buzzer to put Eagles up 16-14 at end of first quarter.
It took couple of minutes before Panthers and Eagles exchanged buckets nearing the five minute mark of the second quarter. Palermino hit an elbow three to put Ealges up 18-16 and Guthrie scored three points to push the Eagles lead to 21-16 with 4:45 left in quarter. With 3:43 the Eagles pushed the lead to 23-16 and Eagles pushed lead out to 28-19 with 2:14 left in half. Waldo with two three point baskets and Guthrie helped push the Eagles to 38-23 halftime lead.
Drake Taylor started the Eagles off with three(assisted by Guthrie) in third quarter. May for Sale Creek had a great block but not good enough as goal tend gave basket to Hill. Eagles continued on to a 74-59 win over Panthers.
Three Eagles made the double digit scoring column with Guthrie leading the way with 26 and Drake Taylor and Kaleb Laws each adding 14 points. Josh Waldo just missed double figures with his trio of three points makes. Also scoring for Eagles were: Palermino 5, Allen 2, Harveston 2 and Thunquist 2. Leading scorers for Sale Creek were: Holland 21, May 14, Defore 7 and Elsea 2.
East Hamiltton 66 Rhea 42
On Tuesday night the Eagles hung close until big East Hamilton third quarter(29-13 advantage) really sealed the deal for East Hamilton on their way to 66-42 win. The Eagles were plagued with turnovers in the game and those resulted in several points by East Hamilton.
Kaleb Laws scored 17 points as the only double digit scorer for the Eagles. Also scoring were Jacob Allen(8), Dylan Palermino(7), Ricky Guthrie(6), Josh Waldo(3) and Noah Keur(3). Three Hurricanes scored 12 points each to lead East Hamilton.
