Shaver and Newell win opening match: drop second round match
Mufreesboro, TN — Rhea County High School doubles team of Kyle Shaver and Brandon Newell ended their season at the State Tournament in Mufreesboro to end a great season for the duo. On their way to State Tournament, the doubles team won District and Region Championship. Newell and Shaver have been playing doubles for three years and will now return looking for a return to State for a second chance at State Championship. Their loss closes the book on the 2018 RCHS tennis season.
On Thursday at the State Tournament, Shaver and Newell began with 6-4,6-4 wins over Ben Dorr and Jarred Burns of Hendersonville. They moved on into semifinals to play Cliff Herring and Pranav Saravanan of Ravenwood. Ravenwood picked up the loss in the match with 6-1,6-1 wins. Also in the State was Bearden High School, coached by Rhea County alumni Tyler Lane. The team of James Eaves and Grayson Marlow, both seniors picked up the State Championship with 6-2,6-3 win over Herring and Saravanan, so Lane was able to exact a bit of revenge for Rhea County.
