April 2018

MONTREAT, N.C. – Coming off a mid-week non-conference victory over Martin Methodist College (Tenn.), the 10th-ranked Bryan College baseball team kept rolling as they headed back into Appalachian Athletic Conference play Friday evening. The Lions made the long trip up to Montreat College where Bryan pitchers Stephen Chamblee and Joseph Cuomo were a deadly combination, silencing the Cavaliers to a mere five hits and no runs as the Lion’s offense delivered two big offensive innings for the 13-0 shutout.

Chamblee notched win number nine on the season, which leads the Bryan team. Over seven innings tossed, Chamblee surrendered five hits and zero runs with just one walk and an impressive nine strikeouts. On six occasions this year, Chamblee has reached double-digit K’s and almost made it seven. At 83.2 innings pitched, he owns an ERA of 2.90 and 9-0 record with a remarkable 117 total strikeouts. Cuomo closed the final frame and ended with a clean sheet along with one strikeout.

Weinburger continues a historic year with another staggering performance, going 2-for-5 with a homerun, stolen base, two runs scored, and a team-high four runs batted in. The other long shot of the day was tallied by Cody Young who finished 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Bryan’s only other extra-base hit came off the bat of Trevor Behrent for a double as he was 1-for-4 with an RBI and pair of runs scored. Lake Burris and Rodney Tennie made the hit’s list with one apiece, while each scored one run and Tennie had a game-best two stolen bags. Despite a no-hit outing for Tyler Scott, he trailed Weinburger with two RBI’s and matched two runs scored. David Scoggins chipped in one RBI. It wasn’t until the fifth inning that Bryan got hot, rallying for a 5-0 advantage. The Lions ended all hope of the Cavaliers in the top of the eighth with eight additional runs, prevailing 13-0 in run-rule fashion after silencing Montreat in the bottom of the inning.

Bryan improved their AAC mark to 17-5 and overall record to 34-11 while bumping Montreat to 9-13 in conference play and 22-24 overall.
